Direct Drive Linear motor
A Direct Drive Linear (DDL) motor is basically a rotary motor that is laid out flat and directly coupled to the driven load. By eliminating mechanical transmission components, this design delivers exceptional performance, extremely high stiffness, very high dynamic speeds and accelerations, high positional accuracy, higher throughput, compact mechanical assembly, quiet operation, zero maintenance and smooth, error-free motion.
Servo Drives
Our servo drives are designed to provide precise control, optimum torque and a rich feature set to complement our wide range of our rotary servo motors and linear positioning systems. We offer the broadest connectivity with the most advanced control technology, simplest commissioning and most compact packaging available in the global marketplace.
Kollmorgen servo drives are utilized by machines to offer motion control in dynamic applications. Kollmorgen servo drives are commonly paired with our broad lineup of Kollmorgen servo motors but are suited to run with most servo motors on the market due to flexible setup software and the most popular feedback support on the market (including resolvers, incremental encoders, BiSS, EnDat, Hiperface, sine encoders). Kollmorgen servo drives even support ac induction motors and dc motors in certain varieties for the ultimate in a platform servo drive functionality.
Kollmorgen servo drives are used for dynamic motion applications where precise positioning, speed control, or torque efficiency is key. Kollmorgen servo drives range from 300 watts to 50,000 watts of continuous duty power output. Peak outputs Kollmorgen servo drives are impressive with peak operation at 3 times the rated continuous current for a full 5 seconds in certain drives. This is a clear Kollmorgen advantage since many manufacturers can only rate peak operation at 1 second or less. This allows many applications to use significantly smaller servo drives and expands the dynamic performance of the servo drive lineup.
Connectivity is a key aspect in machines so fieldbus options are plentiful. We support many popular ethernet fieldbuses like EtherCAT, Ethernet /IP, Profinet, and SynqNet. Support for traditional fieldbuses is available on certain models as well, including Profibus, Devicenet, CanOpen, RS485, RS232, and Sercos II. An upcoming technology making machines safer is functional integrated safety in servo drives. Kollmorgen S700 servo drives are available with integrated safety functionality. This allows machine builders to create inherently safer machines with flexible safety zones with less wiring and configuration than ever before. Supporting products are developed using the IEC61508 specification and can allow builders to certify machines adherent to the ISO13984 specification when applied using proper specification practices.
Direct Drive Cartridge DDR®
Our exclusive Cartridge DDR® servo motors combine the performance advantages of a frameless motor with the ease of installation of a full-frame motor. They feature an integrated, factory-aligned high resolution feedback device and a unique bearingless design that couples directly to the load, using the machine’s own bearings to support the rotor. Most models can be installed in under five minutes.

These new servomotors can be driven by all Kollmorgen servo amplifiers. Seven flange sizes and a large number of winding options with optional feedback systems provide maximum flexibility for machine design. A special production process facilitates the delivery of different frame lengths, winding versions, flange standards (IEC-NEMA-JIS), various feedback systems and connection methods.
Power output and dynamics
Compared with everyday servomotors from other manufacturers, AKM motors have a considerably higher power output for a given frame size. The motors have low inertia rotors for high dynamic performance and they exhibit very low cogging.
Feedback
The standard versions of these motors are fitted with 2-pole hollow-shaft resolvers. They can alternatively be fitted with additional feedback systems:
Smart Feedback Device (SFD, the intelligent Kollmorgen feedback system)
High-resolution EnDat (optical or inductive), BISS encoder,
Comcoder (incremental commutating encoder).
Holding Brake
The motors can be supplied with a built-in holding brake as an option.
Safety
The winding temperature is monitored and signalled by a PTC temperature sensor in the stator winding.
